Map your bag.
A playful introduction to data visualisation

Inge Gobert
St. Lukas Hogeschool

Mapping, the systematic organization of complex information in a form which may be transported and reinterpreted, in an activity that has much in common with graphic design - the collecting, editing and representation of information in a communicable visual form might be defined as the very core of the discipline. Designers have a responsibility to create work which is both accessible and understandable to its intended audience. (Ian Noble/Russel Bestley)

Before you start mapping complex data such as urban structures or scientific information where accuracy is very important, it seems logic to start and practicing with aspects of your own life, things who are literally at close hand. Yet, it might be rather confronting to dig into your own life and show a part of your personality to the world. In this workshop the participants will collect and visualize data out of their own life in a subjective and innovating way. Visually classifying this information can happen in a rational or intuitive way, it can be real or virtual, scientific or poetic. The information can be translated into schemes, inventive codes, graphical abstractions, etc. The focus within this workshop lies on the (graphical) choices the participants make in order to reflect their personality. The individual working results will be presented and discussed in the group.
